BUNDLE N.3 : AFRICAN PHOTOGRAPHERS
In this bundle you will find:
BAGADADJI - Malick Sidibé / Mali
Bagadadji is a concentrate of the best portraits of a youth caught in the euphoria of Mali’s independence
“A little more to the left, higher, the arm farther from the body, yes, so we can see it better!” We still think we can hear the instructions of the photographer in the pose of the man who, one day in July 1970, went to the Malick studio, in the Bagadadji district of Bamako, the capital of Mali, to be photographed. Dressed in an immaculate shirt and trousers, this man of about thirty years ostensibly presents to the camera a dark bottle, without cap or label. It seems to be the real object of the shooting; for her, the man, well dressed, agrees to take a stiff, almost artificial posture, the left foot placed on a small platform, in a slightly curved pose. It seems that the bottle, with the bands of clear reflections of the light of the flash, stares at the observer in the same way as it stares at the serious gaze of man. What could the photographer have thought when he opened the shutter of his camera and what was the motivation of his vis-à-vis by letting himself be drawn in this posture and with this accessory?

Les dimanches de Traoré - Adama Traoré/ Ivory Coast
“Away from traditional African portraitists and the Peulpe on breaks, With Amadou Traoré we are witnessing the birth of a new form of original expression that testifies in an offbeat and almost musical language to youth and this precarious and unique feeling that seems to exorcise and then embrace the passing of time.”

Studio d'Afrique - Adama Kouyaté/ Mali
Adama Kouyaté willingly takes liberties with the agreed rules of studio photography. Instead of having three lamps for a greater light, it content itself with two side lamps and removes the mood lamp. It highlights the shadows of subjects and accessories. It explores the desires and desires of elegance of the subject photographed. Even if the latter is not a smoker, he puts a cigarette between his fingers to make him look mundane. He organizes and aesthetizes the poses, creates a temporary connivance to make magic possible. The more the photographer dares to free himself from the «aesthetic» canons established by his colleagues, the more he creates a surprising image of his subject. And this invention becomes its trademark that each customer disseminates and comments on».
