A big Senoufo‘s pottery handmade in Burkina Faso, truly unique. It represents the five sacred animal in the Senoufo’s society : the hornbill, turtle, crocodile, chameleon and boa. Next to them, there is a human face.

Each animal has a power and a symbol whose meaning is revealed during the Poro initiation ceremonies :

• The Serpent represents the virile member.

• The Turtle the woman's womb.

• The Crocodile power.

• The Chameleon is the symbol of wisdom because it knows how to adapt to circumstances

• The Hornbill with its long beak plunging into the rounded belly, evokes the pregnant woman.

“In the beginning everything was water and the calao hovered above it with its mother. One day misfortune struck the hornbill family, the mother died. He had to be buried, yet Kolotchôlô (God) had not yet created the earth. The hornbill loaded his mother's body on the head, that's why the hornbill has a big head; and this is what obliges all the Senoufo to devote between 7 and 21 years of their life to serve ''Katchelêw''.

After that, the creator created a being who is the crocodile, and the almighty ''Kolotchôlô'' created the earth in the eyes of the crocodile.

Since he did not have the courage to walk on the earth, then he created another very courageous and patient animal, the chameleon who arrived on earth; the chameleon found the earth to be very fragile, so to avoid breaking it he walked carefully.

Then comes the turtle the only animal that bows to the elders or the older ones. This is why it is called ''goun 'go'' the animal that can live very long, the most polite and the most respectful ( insiders will understand).

Finally the boa the master of wisdom, the only animal capable of refraining from its deadly venom against those who attack it, those who do not know think that this animal does not have. However, it is because of its wisdom that this snake always reserves its venom.
